examination: Your veterinarian will examine your
pet's eyes, nose, ears, mouth and coat for any ex-
ternal evidence of problems.
Your veterinarian will listen to your pet's heart and
lungs and palpate its abdomen for any abnormali-
ties.
Your pet will be weighed and have its conformation
checked (muscles and joints) and a proper diet and
proper supplements will be discussed.
Parasites: Your veterinarian will check for evidence
of external parasites i.e. fleas, ticks, mites, and lice.
Internal parasites - common ones are heartworm
and intestinal worms - will be checked with blood
and stool exams.
These exams will help you and your veterinarian
select the most appropriate and the safest parasite
prevention program.
Vaccinations: Dogs and cats must be vaccinated
to prevent rabies by Florida law. There are many
additional vaccines available which are given com-
mensurate with your pet's potential risk. These
must be considered if your pet spends time outside,
goes to kennels or groomers, goes to dog parks or
travels out of state. One size does not fit all, so it is
very important to discuss this with your family vet-
erinarian before committing to a `package' that your
pet may not need.
Ask your veterinarian the most effective ways to
keep your pet healthy. This includes how to care for
its teeth, how to protect its joints and how to care
for the senior pet. If your pet has not been spayed
or neutered, arrange to have one of these crucial
surgeries done both to prevent many future prob-
lems with your pet and to help reduce the serious
overpopulation problem we currently face.

twice a year for a happier,
healthier pet!
