The use of acupuncture in animals is thousands
of years old. Although originating in China, many
veterinarians around the world have become excellent
healers using this time-honored technique. At its most
basic level, acupuncture (combined with the use of
herbal recipes and massage) is used to treat
imbalances in Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang
are two opposing components that
make up the whole universe as well
as the bodies of all living creatures.
For example, there cannot be
light (yang) without dark (yin). An
imbalance between these could
prove disastrous for the environment.
The same goes for disharmony within the
body. A Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist
(CVA) can place sterile needles in acupoints on the
animal to help find a balance when one in not present
(disease). The information he/she gains from an in-
depth history as well as a complete Chinese physical
examination determine which points are used for
which cases. Commonly, both cats and dogs will learn
to enjoy the feelings the needles produce and they
become sedate (some even fall asleep) during their
treatment. Often, animals can feel better after one
treatment. However, three to six 15-30 minute
treatments are usually recommended.
Combined with Western medicine,
TCVM gives the veterinary
practitioner more weapons to battle
different diseases. With the existence
of excellent training programs in
the United States, this modality of
treatment is becoming commonplace
throughout the veterinary community.
