I have always been intrigued by the human-animal
bond. I've had pets since I was young and continue
to have them as an adult. It was as an adult that I felt
the need to give back to the animal community by
volunteering and what an experience it has been!
My first official volunteer `gig' began with a question-
naire that could have been entrance into The Federal
Witness Protection Program I had no idea there
would be so much clearance Clarence! But there are
very good reasons for this and these organizations
do their background checks and they do them well.
I was given the `all clear' and so began my humble
volunteer beginnings cleaning up rabbit poo on Sat-
urday mornings.
After a couple weeks of mastering the whole rabbit
poo thing I started helping with the cats & dogs.
Everyone was warning me that it would be too tough
to handle that I'd want to bring them all home...
and for a brief time I was concerned that might hap-
pen...but I learned very quickly that it doesn't work
that way. Shelter animals have such a genuine ap-
preciation to anyone showing them comfort and at-
tention...that it's not always clear who is benefitting
more from that interaction you or them. I wouldn't
trade the experiences I've shared with such a crazy
cast of characters - like the time "Twister" (and there
was good reason for that name) took me for a `walk'
(who knew you could really be airborne via a leash
just like in cartoons?) ...or the morning a very sweet
little terrier named "Andy" who to the untrained eye
appeared incapable of hatching such an elaborate
plot managed to escape from his area while I was
putting on his leash and proceeded to run rampant
through the entire facility barking to his shelter-mates
to join him seriously, a terrier named Andy almost
caused the end of my volunteer career...or the very
endearing bond with a senior pit bull named "Faith"
who would change every thought you ever had about
the misunderstood breed...she was one of the sweet-
est dogs I have ever had the pleasure of knowing...a
valuable lesson indeed.
So it doesn't matter if you volunteer to walk the dogs,
cuddle an aging cat, stuff envelopes or help out at an
event what matters is that you will be making a huge
difference in the lives of these animals...and don't be
surprised by difference it makes in your own.
